HYSA vs CD Calculator

Enter the APYs and term. See which option earns more if you hold to maturity — and what happens if you break the CD early.

HYSA rates can change at any time. CD rates are fixed for the term. Penalty math is a simplified months-of-interest model — read your account agreement.

Liquidity versus a locked rate

A high-yield savings account (HYSA) lets you move money in and out, usually with no penalty, while the bank can change the APY whenever it wants. A CD locks both your money and the rate for a stated term. When CD yields sit clearly above HYSA yields, the locked rate looks attractive — until you need the cash and pay an early-withdrawal penalty.

This calculator compounds both options for the same principal and period, then subtracts an approximate penalty (months of interest) from the CD side to show a break-early scenario. Use it as a planning sketch, then confirm the bank’s exact penalty formula.

Reading the results

  • If the CD wins on a hold-to-term basis by only a small amount, a HYSA may still be better once you value flexibility.
  • If you are confident you will not need the money, the locked CD rate removes the risk that the HYSA yield falls.
  • For money you might need in under a year, prefer a HYSA or a very short CD inside a ladder.

Taxes and inflation

Interest from both HYSAs and CDs is generally taxable as ordinary income. Neither tool adjusts for inflation or state tax. Compare after-tax yields mentally if your marginal rate is high, and keep emergency cash in liquid accounts even when long CDs look richer on paper. See HYSA vs CD: which to choose.

How to use this tool

Enter realistic numbers from your own statements, contracts or shopping list — not round guesses when precision matters. Results update as you type and stay in your browser; nothing is uploaded to our servers. Screenshot or write down the output with the date so you can compare later.

Change one input at a time when you are comparing scenarios. That makes cause and effect obvious. If you share the result with a partner, client or advisor, share the inputs too so nobody debates a black-box number.

This page is general information and arithmetic, not personalised professional advice. Rules, tax rates, bank disclosures and retailer policies change. When an official source disagrees with text here, trust the official source and tell us via the contact page so we can fix the page.

What the numbers mean

Read every label carefully. Annual figures are not the same as monthly figures. Pre-tax is not the same as take-home. A planning cushion is not a filed tax return. An estimated maturity value assumes you hold a CD to term; early withdrawal usually forfeits interest. Gift ideas are categories, not live product prices.

Use related guides on this site for the “why” behind the math, and use sister sites on dollarfinch.com when the job belongs elsewhere — for example carrier Christmas cutoffs on HolidayCutoff, Secret Santa draws on SantaSorted, paycheck withholding on Take-Home Clarity, open enrollment on EnrollWise, and year-end tax moves on Year-End Moves.

Good habits

Bookmark the tool you use most. Re-run it when your inputs change materially — a new freelance retainer, a different savings balance, a new gift list, or a new quarterly tax estimate. Keep a short checklist next to the results: decision, date, inputs, next review.

Do not paste Social Security numbers, bank passwords or full card numbers into any web form, including ours. We do not ask for them. For invoices, prefer business names and payment instructions you already share with clients.

If something looks wrong, include the URL and the inputs you used when you contact us. We correct factual mistakes and update the “last updated” stamp. We do not prepare taxes, open bank accounts, or buy gifts on your behalf.

Limits of this calculator

Models are simplified on purpose so you can understand them. A transparent estimate you can explain beats a complex spreadsheet you cannot. Edge cases — multiple states, partial-year freelancing, callable CDs, international shipping, household-specific allergies — may need a professional or the retailer’s own tools.

Seasonal pages should be checked against the date on the page before you rely on a deadline. Evergreen finance pages should still be re-checked when the IRS or your bank publishes new figures for the year.

Thanks for using a free tool responsibly. When you are ready, scroll back to the form, enter your numbers, and keep a copy of the output with your records.

Frequently asked questions

Why might a lower HYSA beat a CD?

If you break the CD early, the penalty can wipe out the rate advantage. Flexibility has value even when the raw APY is lower.

Are online bank HYSAs safe?

If the bank is FDIC-insured (or the credit union is NCUA-insured) and you stay within coverage limits, deposits are insured on the same basis as a branch bank.

Can I ladder HYSAs?

Not really — HYSAs have no term. You can still split cash across banks for coverage or rate shopping.
